they could be moved on guns. you wrote in the "huffington post," advocating reducing defense spending so you can spend more money and invest in the united states. the question is in the negotiations in congress over the spending do you see that happening? >> we've got to make it happen. again, it's got to be the voice of the american people that will make it happen. people don't realize that 60% of our discretionary money go to the defense. wewe need and want a strong defense, with you but quite frankly out dateed cold war-era weapons can be taken off the table. there are many, many ways we can save money with defense in our pentagon budget, and never even touch anything that would affect our troops and their benefits and their families or national defense. nothing is off of the table and we have to under that defense can't be off of the table. we have to keep defense on the table as part of the negotiations as we move forward. i cannot accept a plan that's going to cut domestic spending by 8%. but i can look at a plan that looks at waste fraud and abuse cuts in the pentagon that will create

the board spending cuts, having defense, half in nondefense. republicans don't like it, democrats don't like it. that creates an opportunity. there's also the question of how long do you extend the debt limit. i think it would be incredibly foolish to renege on the debt of the united states. it would be enormous consequences. that is a losing proposition for everyone. but how long we extend the debt limit, that is open to negotiation. and between the two of how long you extend the debt limit, and number two, how you deal with the sequestered, gives you an opportunity for another attempt at a grand bargain. revenue and spending we strength, especially on the mandatory programs to get america back on track. we can do. we done much tougher things before. and this is our next opportunity to put america in a preeminent position in the world. if we solve this problem, there is nothing that can stop the united states from continuing to be the most important and dominant country in the world. thank you. 've already made to priorities other than medicare, medicaid, social security and defense mean that we spend on everything from education to public safety less as a share of our economy than it has -- than has been true for a generation. and that's not a recipe for growth. so we've got to do more both to stabilize our finances over the medium and long term, but also spur more growth in the short term. i've said i'm open to making modest adjustments to programs like medicare to protect them for future generations. i've also said that we need more revenue through tax reform by closing loopholes in our tax code for the wealthiest americans. if we combine a balanced package of savings from spending on health care and revenues from closing loopholes, we can solve the deficit issue without sacrificing our investments in things like education that are going to help us grow. it turns out the american people agree with me. they listened to an entire year's debate over this issue, and they made a clear decision about the approach they prefer. they don't think it's fair, for example, to ask a senior to

of youth juvenile justice organizations. it seems to eliminate what the children's defense fund calls the cradle to prison pipeline and replace it with a cradle to college and career pipeline by investing in children. every time you do that using evidence-based approaches, you significantly reduce crime and save more money than you spend. the fact of the matter is, my friend at the university of virginia frequently mentions. if your school shooting prevention program begins when the shooter is at the door, it's too late. now, you have to reduce violence generally, you have to talk about the mental health. and if you've got a troubled child that's trying to mass an arsenal of weapons to shoot somebody, you've got to intervene before they show up at the door. i mean, there's a lot that we can do that can protect our children. and we shouldn't be focused on just one. i support the assault weapons ban. i don't think -- i supported it when it came in 20 years ago. i opposed the expiration that should have been continued. that's just one, the magazines, mental health, and prevention. >> con

an end to the hostage crisis at a gas plant. defense secretary leon panetta says there is still work to do. here's the latest. >> the loss of life as a result of these attacks is appalling, not acceptable. >> reporter: british defense minister philip hammond, alongside leon panetta, declaring the hostage crisis in algeria over. this comes after reports of algerian officials commanding a final push into the sahara desert to end the four-day crisis at a gas plant. >> lot of this information still remains sketchy. we know that lives have been lost and i pledge to continue our close consultation on this issue until the crisis is finally ended. >> reporter: the state news agency says seven hostages were executed before the attack and 11 al-qaeda-linked gunmen were killed after the assault on the complex. at least 19 hostages have been killed during this ordeal, including one american. >> we have made a commitment that we're going to go after al- qaeda wherever they are and wherever they try to hide. >> reporter: meanwhile, more hostages recount their experiences after their release. the a
